Barbara Said:

what is the impact of a higher Yield on 10-year Treasury Bond to the bond , equities and forex market?

We Answered:

Higher Yield securities represent the riskiest companies, projects, etc, and therefore compete with other risky investments, such as equities. For instance, if you are a risk taker, and Delta Airlines offer you a bond that pays you 15% a year, then you may consider it buying it, and selling your Cisco shares that may give you that return. The impact on the 10-Years are less significant than other riskier investment, however, when higher yields are going up in prices, it means that the yields are going down, which produces some preasure to other fix income investments. Forex markets are a completely different animal. They don't correlate with anything.

That is, for each dollar you invest in the 21 yr, go the opposite direction by 21/16 the 16 yr bond. this way, you have the same derivative for each bond with respect to interest rates, but with opposite signs, effectively cancelling sensitivity.Shawn Said:Why is bond duration measured in years? We Answered:Duration is a weighted average of the *times of...

Having been 100% invested in bonds for two years, I have a special interest in those instruments. It is true that when interest rates go up, existing bond values go down for the reason you mention. Bond Investment Strategy

Jason Said:Bond Investment Strategies? We Answered:The way you invest in bonds for the short-term or the long-term depends on your investment goals and time frames, the amount of risk you are willing to take and your tax status. When considering a bond investment strategy, remember the importance of diversification. You will want to diversify the risks within your bond investments by creating a portfolio of several bonds, each with different characteristics. Choosing bonds from different issuers protects...

    Bond Markets

Valerie Said:Why is the bond market so important? We Answered:The theory is this: without quantitative easing the markets would be flooded with government debt (GLITS and/or Treasuries) and since there were not enough buyers the value of the govt. debt would fall. When the valuations fall interest rates go up, which, in turn, drop the value and raise the yield on corporate bonds and raise interest rates on any new mortgages being created. If enough of this happens the bond market (which is the only capital raising market left in the US since the stock market and corporate lenders are in...

    Bond Market Commentary

Miguel Said:How does raising interest rates effect inflation? We Answered:Raising interest rates makes borrowing more expensive, both for individuals, and for businesses. Mortgages and lines of credit are more expensive, and companies have to pay more on bonds to issue them. The net impact of that is that people (and companies) spend less. Spending less means there is less demand for goods and services. Less demand for goods and services means companies don't hire as many people/work as much overtime etc. There's less pressure in the jobs market, less demand for raw materials, etc. and prices level off, or don't...

Interest rates are increased or decreased depending on inflation. Consumer spending makes up about 60% of the US GDP and most probably have a big impact on inflation. Retail sales is one of the key indicators of consumer spending and is therefore linked to inflation -> interest rates -> bond prices, stock prices. The effects of retail sales is abit more ambiguous on the USD because there are other factors that influence the movement...

An open market purchase means that the FOMC is putting cash into the marketplace and taking bonds away. A key item to understand is this increase in cash may be temporary or permanent. The Fed is constantly adjusting the money supply for the season effects of demand for cash. For instance, people tend to take cash out of the bank for holidays, like the 4th of July. The Fed may add money temporarily to meet this demand. The Fed may also add money...

Bonds are traded (bought and sold) as securities, similar to stocks. Just like stocks, their value will go up and down over time. Jeffrey Said:How do increases or decreases affect bond prices? We Answered:From what I understand, the only things that change bond prices are: a) Your credit b) Your contract amount c) Your agency d) Your surety company (the one your agency picked for you) Typically the companies we see are rated based on credit. There are a few standard rates for people with different types of credit. Other companies might charge more or less for the same credit scores but I'm sure it averages to be about the same. I can't imagine taxes affect that - aside from charging insurance companies more which may make them charge you...

    Bond Spreads

Thomas Said:Any bond spreads experts? We Answered:Hi I think your question is a bit confused. The spread is the difference in price between two instruments. So if the spread between a corporate and a treasury narrows, it's either because the corporate went up or the treasury went down. Presumably treasuries don't go down very often though, so that's where your assumption comes from, that usually when the spread narrows it's because the price of a bond goes up. If the treasury yield goes up then it's another way of saying that the price of the treasury went down....

Even though we purchased them for half the cost of the face value, they most likely will, depending on what bond you've purchased, at least hold the face value of the bond plus a small yield. The bonds have the potential to make more money the longer the kids keep holding them, so they are keeping the bonds with the hope that the bonds are going to make them a decent return. They are not aggressive, but growth depends on...

    Bond Trading Strategy

Jesus Said:How can we differentiate between Speculation vs gambling vs trading with risk ?We Answered:Some definitions make a difference between speculation and investment, whereby investors are more diligent and have more information than speculators when buying into an asset, such as stocks, bonds, real estate or commodities. As a result, speculation is considered more risky than an investment and is understood as a form of betting. However, this definition is in my view artificial and does not accurately reflect the reality. More recent research seems to indicate that the performance of an investment is much more driven by randomness than investors...

    Bond Valuation

Angela Said:What is implication of the dividend yield on the stock valuation? We Answered:In the long run, dividend yield has almost no bearing on the valuation of the stock. The stock's value is the discounted present value of its future free cash flows. If the cash dividend were kept in the company, it could be used to presumably generate more future value for the corporation. In the short run, a cash dividend will reduce the value of the stock by some amount (not always the value of the cash dividend) once it goes ex-dividend. This is due to the payout of the...

For any bond, the cash flows (principal, coupons) are well known. Duration Of Bond

Alberto Said:Is there any way to find the duration of a bond using a definite integral? We Answered:My understanding of the duration of a bond is that it is the time weighted present value of the payments divided by the present value of the payments. The time weighted present value of the payments is a sum. So if you had many, very frequent payments, say every day, then an integral would be an appropriate way to approximate the duration. However, typically bond payments are made twice a year, so I would think an integral would not be a...

For example, during periods of economic downturn, bonds and other fixed investments actually produce better returns than other investments. Of course, there are other years when stocks outweigh the fixed. If you chart each "type" of investment each year, ranking them from highest return to lowest (which there are charts like this out there-- I cannot seem to find one right now), the investment types jump...

    Investment Grade Bond

Billy Said:what is investment grade debt,LQD?We Answered:The investment seeks investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance of a segment of the U.S. investment-grade corporate bond market index. The fund typically invests at least 90% of assets in the bonds of the underlying index, and at least 95% of assets in investment grade corporate bonds. It may also invest in bonds not included in the underlying index. The fund may also invest up to 5% of assets in repurchase agreements collateralized by U.S. government obligations, and in cash and cash equivalents. Yes, investment grade bonds.Sylvia Said:What are some...

    Mortgage Bond Market

Sylvia Said:How does a decline in the bond market (and in the various time series) affect home prices? We Answered:On the same track, a decline in the bond market is coincident with higher interest rates, so fewer home buyers qualify for the same mortgage. Fewer buyers=higher supply, lower demand. Lower demand=lower price.Tyrone Said:The Warren Buffet plan for the bond market? We Answered:his offer is to re-insure the municipal bond insurance business on the books of the bond insurance houses. his company would be paid for this. as you'll guess, the municipal bond insurance business is stable and profitable. Municipal Bond Yield Curve

Beth Said:Is there an independent website that educates me on which NY municipal bond funds are?We Answered:Try morningstar.com. They are the industry standard for investor advice on mutual funds. You do realize that "maximum yield" and "no risk" do not go together....? If you buy a higher yielding fund, it will included either risky bonds and/or leverage. If you go too far out on the yield curve to increase the yield, the bonds will loose money if interest rates rise in the future (which is likely with a 10 year investing time frame). You will probably do better with a diversified bond fund...

    Muni Bond Market

Marie Said:Is my fidelity Money Market Mutual Fund safe?We Answered:You're fine in Fidelity's money market fund. Here are some reasons: 1. They've been conservative with their holdings and have chosen to sacrifice yield (interest) for safety -- a good sign of prudent management. 2. They don't have any exposure to Lehman debt, and only miniscule exposure to other problem companies like Merrill Lynch and AIG. 3. Money market funds are Fidelity's bread and butter, so they have a lot more to lose than you if they let one of their MM funds "break the buck." 4. Fidelity also has...

    Muni Bond Prices

Juanita Said:Why are bond funds not the right thing to be in right now? ?We Answered:Bond funds are basically a bundle of various bonds, and the whole package is sold like it's an individual stock. As you've seen lately, the entire stock market is in the pits. So, prices for the fund as a whole are way down (I know - I'm in some closed end muni-bond funds that have had HORRIBLE price performance. Ouch!). However, the individual bonds that comprise the funds don't necessarily run the risk of default (unless it's a junk-bond fund). Which means, that the bond fund...

    New Bond Issues

Vincent Said:When does the new James Bond movie come out?We Answered:If you can't wait for the movie you can waste some time reading the November issue of Playboy. Go to the website NSI and it will list all winners going back years who have not claimed their prize. It also lists your holding I.E. what value say £25 quids worth. Pricing Convertible Bond

John Said:What is the structure of convertible bonds? We Answered:Basically, convertible bonds are financial instruments that represent debt. The lender has the option to receive payment of the debt in cash at the end of the term, or to convert the debt to shares of the company instead. Things you need to figure out to come up with a structure: - Par value of each bond - What will be the price of the bond - What will be the interest on the bond - What is the conversion rate of bonds to shares = this means you set a conversion price per share or...

    Second Bond

Cindy Said:How many years can you get for a second-degree murder charge being held on a $500,000 bond?We Answered:Generally, life. The amount of the bond is irrelevant.Debra Said:Said I would pay closing costs with a bond in my offer on house, having second thoughts, is it too late?We Answered:NO, it's a second, and you may be over-extending yourselves That's the most common problem of first time buyers--overextending themselves The realtors get paid ONLY if and when the sale closes, so of course they want you to do this It is a cost of you obtaining a mortgage and buying a home, the closing...

    Single Bond

Alexander Said:In a trigonal structure how does the double bond affect the angle between the two single bonds? We Answered:The double bond has higher electron density than a single bond. Thus the double-bond -single bond repulsions are greater than the single bond -single bond, making the single bond -single bond angle smaller than either of the 2 double bond-single bond angles and thus smaller than 120 deg.Jean Said:How come when ethylene (H2C=CH2) is brought together into polyethylene, the double bond becomes a single bond?We Answered:Ethylene, because of its double bond, is more reactive than ethane. Double bonded carbons make molecule...

(Where she's the target!) Given the world she lives in, that's about it.Hugh Said:Why is a bond with glue super glue so much stronger than regular glue?We Answered:The main ingredient in most super glue is cyanoacrylate C5H5NO2. And is not water solvent, adhereing instantly to...

    The Bond Market

Crystal Said:When mortgage lenders say "the bond market moved" so the rates are going to go down, what does that mean?We Answered:There are two bond markets in general that affect mortgage rates. The first is US government bonds, which help establish a "credit risk free" yield (or rate). The second is the mortgage bond market. When you get a mortgage, it is put into a pool of other similar mortgages. That pool is then sliced up and sold as bonds to investors. Those bonds trade in a market of their own. When you...

    The Bond Market Association

Virgil Said:What is a Stock Market? When was it discovered or made?We Answered:The expression 'stock market' refers to the system that enables the trading of company stocks (collective shares), other securities, and derivatives. Bonds are still traditionally traded in an informal, over-the-counter market known as the bond market. Commodities are traded in commodities markets, and derivatives are traded in a variety of markets. Historian Fernand Braudel suggests that in Cairo in the 11th century Muslim and Jewish merchants had already set up every form of trade association and had knowledge of every method of credit and payment, disproving the belief that...

Go to their website at www.edwardjones.com and enter your zip code to find the closest office. With 10,000 locations, chances are there's one within 10 miles of where your live. I've found...

    Trade Bond

Gerald Said:What are the trade-offs invovled in investry in a saving account, a bond, a stock and a mutual fund?We Answered:It is all about risk and reward, but at the end of the day, investing in all of the sources should be looked into. To invest to your best advantage you need a diverse portfolio. Basically look at it like this. Savings Account: You'll make a lot interest rate, but it's a completly safe place to store cash for emergencies or for a bigger purchase in your future. A bond is also almost completly safe for most extents except you...

    Uk Bond Market

April Said:Does anybody know of any good literature books on the market in the UK?We Answered:I would start with Charles Dickens. If not the best, his "A Tale of Two Cities" ranks among the best of books ever written - also "Oliver Twist" or "David Copperfield". Then maybe Daniel Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe", Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking-glass", William Golding's "Lord of the Flies", Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice", anything at all by Rudyard Kipling ("Kim", "Just So Stories"), Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ("Sherlock Holmes", "The White Company") and the Bronte Sisters ("Wuthering Heights" by...

    Uk Investment Bond

Lynn Said:A problem about bond investment? We Answered:Those bonds are yielding approx 3.023% per annum $750x(103.023%)^9.66yrs = $1,000.01 Now if you have the heart for it, I have added a little additional info: 2009 Central bank (US) are indicating that they will keep interest rates low for a fair period of time. But interest rates may rise in say 5 years time, in which case it could be a better bet to buy a 5 year duration in case you can get a better rate at that time, and then invest the money again. Although it creates a bit more work to do that....

    Understanding The Bond Market

George Said:What is a bond market? We Answered:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bond_market Wikipedia is not a good research site, but it does offer a pretty well put definition of a bond market. I'm a beginner and don't understand either, but i'm using about three of the finance books to try to help you. Work with me here. Okay, according to The complete idiot's guide to money for teens, a bond is "a debt instrument. The issuer promises to pay the investor a specified amount of interest for a period of time and to repay the principal at maturity." You know how a savings bond works, right? You pay...say...

    Zero Coupon Bond Rate

Lydia Said:Does anyone know what the rate for a zero coupon is currently getting? We Answered:A Zero coupon bond doesn't pay interest, that's why it's called a zero coupon. The way you make money is that the bond sells at a deep discount and the money is made when the bond is redeemed at maturity at full face value. As an example, the zero may have a face value of $1000, but will sell at say $700. It pays no interest over the life of the bond, but when you redeem it, you'll get the full face value of $1000.Gregory...
