By Federal Law, all consumers are entitled to one free credit report every 12 months and this is the site indicated by the government to obtain it.
Make sure you get the report that includes reports from all three bureaus. If you are prompted to sign up for anything, decline and you will eventually get to the place where you can get your free reports.

We Answered:How they catch you, I don't know, but the technology exists. Of that I am sure. It is theft and fraud, and you can go to jail, and I hope you do. Credit card companies and stores raise prices to pay for all the stuff you guys steal. Those of us who don't steal are getting tired of paying for your dishonesty.

The problem would be when you ALSO have to enter the matching expiration date, CVV code number, and billing address. Good luck making up the right ones to match the number.

There's also PayPal, which allows you to make prepaid debit card numbers (MasterCard), even if the place you want to shop doesn't take PayPal. I think you need to install their plugin to use it though...
American Express used to, but no longer, offers virtual credit cards on any of their cards.
I haven't found any visa cards that support this either.
Some MasterCards support this; check with your card issuer.
