Credit Repair Tip
James Said:Any good tip on repairing your own credit?
We Answered:First thing you have to do is a get FREE copies of your credit reports from each of the following major companies: Experian, TransUnion and Equifax at http://www.annualcreditreport.com. You're entitled to get free copies once a year. Get the copies online. Read each of them for inaccuracies and you can dispute online. "Dispute" is a poweful word here.
If you find inaccurate items, like an open collection that was paid years ago, dispute it. The credit reporting company has to verify the validity of the item with the creditor within 30 days. If they find the item too old or inaccurate, it will be deleted from your credit report. Sometimes, even if the item is legit, the item could be deleted due to inaction on the part of the creditor.
Each item deleted adds 20-25 points to your FICO score. An excellent score is 720 and it goes up to 850.
If you find negative items including unpaid credit card balances, which are more than 7 years old, ask the credit reporting agency to delete them.
Bankruptcy and Foreclosure stays on the credit report for 10 years. There's nothing anyone can do about that.
Doing this yourself saves you some money. Hope this helps.
