Steven Said:

Christmas gift for new baby- Savings bond or savings account?

We Answered:

Are you planning to add more money over the years? Open a savings account in the child's name.

If it's a one-time thing, you buy a savings bond for 50% of face value: you pay $25 for a $50 bond, etc. the interest is not taxable until the bond is cashed in (unlike a savings account, where someone will have to pay taxes every year on the interest). It's not a great interest rate, but it's simple, it's easy (buy or cash at any bank), and the child will always know the money came from you. This is why grandparents buy savings bonds for new babies!

    Buying Savings Bonds

Bradley Said:Would it be wise to invest in savings bonds? We Answered:Not at this point, only because their rate of return is so low. Your grandparents might remember the days before FDIC insurance, and so see savings bonds as the safest savings method. In reality, there's no difference between an account with FDIC (or NCUA) insurance and a savings bond, except for the rate. You can get better rates on a 12-month CD than on any savings bond right now. As someone right out of college, your best bet is honestly the markets right now. Make sure you first have funds set up...

    Buy A Savings Bond

Eugene Said:Should I buy a savings bond to give as a birthday present? We Answered:I wholeheartedly agree with the idea, my kids were the same with parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles etc they always got so much at one time that the toys didn't get played with or the clothes were outgrown before they were worn once or twice. A contribution to their financial future to me is a wonderful idea. As the first answer says though all in all they don't have a very good return on the investment and if there was a way the family as a whole could...

    Canadian Savings Bonds

Gilbert Said:What is the Canadian Savings Bond?We Answered:a canadian savings bond is a bond that you buy from the federal canadian government. these can be bought at any federal building(maybe a city hall) or bank. bonds work like a reverse loan. you let the canadian government "borrow" your money for a certain amount of time or term. terms can be 1-5 years long. your money is locked for the whole term and cannot be redeemed. the way you make money off a bond is by getting interest from your money. at the end of your term the government will give...

    Cashing In Savings Bond

Betty Said:Savings bond questions (cashing them in?)?We Answered:The bank that I work in, will only cash bonds for people who have other accounts with us. That may not be the case with the banks in your area. Call them and ask. As long as they are willing to cash in the bonds so that you can open an acount with them, you can cash the bonds that have your name and SS# on them. The ones that are in your Grandmother's name and SS# are another thing. If your name is not listed as beneficiary,...

Chester Said:Cashing in a savings bond -- Tax Concern? We Answered:The percentage you would pay would be based on your other income, it's hard to say without knowing your situation. On $2500 it would range from about 10% up to 35% depending on your income. Most people about 15%. A way around this for the future, if your children get savings bonds, you can file a tax return for the child each year, declaring the amount of interest the bond earns that year. Unless your kid is quite wealthy they won't pay any tax yearly and when time comes...

    College Savings Bonds

Vera Said:savings bonds and college? We Answered:Yes, and your kids' financial aid applications will be affected whether you keep the bonds or sell them. A) Keep the bonds and hold them until your kids graduate from college. Put the interest income from the EE savings bonds into self-directed IRA's in each child's name. That way, the income from the bond interest can grow tax-deferred while your kids are in school. Once the kids graduate, the kids can cash out their IRA's and use the money to pay for education expenses, and not get hit with taxes. Sell the...

Brett Said:Help Re: Series I & EE Savings Bonds? We Answered:You will report it as a capitol gain and pay taxes only on the interest you earned over the last 10 years. The initial investment into the bond will not be taxed. So, if you had purchased a $100 I Series Bond in 2000 you could cash it in today for $182 and you would pay taxes on $82. I can't see you getting better than that unless you're prepared to take at least some risk. How about 50k in Icesave, and 20k in low / med risk shares ? That would still give you a very low risk overall, and a fair return. Purchase Savings Bond

Lloyd Said:Would it be a better to invest in a municipal bond or a savings account that earns 3% interest each month? WHY?We Answered:They both have advantages and disadvantages. The savings account is liquid, meaning you can withdraw your money anytime, no questions asked. But, you can't really consider it an investment because 3% is less than inflation, you are really paying the bank about 1% to store your money for you (inflation is 4% on average, although its higher right now). The municipal bond will probably pay higher than 3% interest unless its for a very short term. There...

The Treasury Direct system will still pay you the interest rate stated for the period, but they wait until the end of the six months to pay the interest. ...

    Savings Bond Redemption Calculator

Robert Said:questions about savings bonds? We Answered:The calculator should be right. The bank shouldn't charge you any fee to redeem the bonds if you are a customer with them. As to whether you should cash them in you'll need to consider what interest the bonds are drawing and how badly (if at all) you need the money. They will continue to gain value until they are 30 years old. So your first bonds will keep growing until 2022. If you still have the 1992 bond(s) in 2022 then you should redeem them because they won't gain...

    Savings I Bonds

Deborah Said:Should I invest money for my child in a bank account or savings bonds? We Answered:Savings bonds are very safe. However, I instead would consider putting that money into high yield 1 year CDs and continually invest that money. I know banks are scary places right now, but the FDIC will ensure that money for up to 100000 dollars. However, talk to a financial adviser as well because if your child goes to college, that money will be computed as what can be contributed to their education, lowering how much financial aid that child can get. Maybe put that CD...

    Value Savings Bonds

Maxine Said:Why would anyone buy US savings bonds at face value? We Answered:Yes, you can buy them at face value. They still earn the pitiful interest rate same as if you had bought them at 1/2 face value. Unlike other treasury securities which are sold in $1000 denominations, savings bonds are sold in $25 denominations. That is one of the reasons people buy them. Another reason might be tradition. For a long time people bought savings bonds for themselves and for their children. And I suppose they passed the tradition on to their children.Antonio Said:Questions about...
